2012 Fasting Diary – Day 30: “Envious”

Day 30 (05/09/12)

“The Lord was with Joseph…” (Gen 39:2,21)
This can almost be called Joseph’s life motto, indeed “The Lord was with Joseph” wherever Joseph went or was or whatever he did. The Lord just helped him and blessed him and he would find favour with all the right people, despite being an “enemy” and under the attack of of those who were jealous of him.

Such a life – to have the presence of the Lord and His favour, would be the envy and desire of all… that is because we only see the status, blessings and successes etc, but how many would be envious of the rejection and hurts and slavery and wrongful accusation and imprisonment etc…?

It is obvious the Lord was always with Joseph because of his good attitude, spirit, and correct reactions; also his constant trust and fixing his eyes on the Lord despite all adverse situations. So before we feel envious and start wishing the Lord would be with us always like the way He was with Joseph, let us first look at our own heart and attitude and examine how we react to our everyday situations and trials…

2012 Fasting Diary – Day 29: “Humility still”

Day 29 (04/09/12)

A heart of simplicity and humility must be maintained, as years go by, we can easily allow our experiences , knowledge etc to take over our child-like simplicity. Another even more common problem is: we tend to hold on to our own opinions and thinking till we cannot accept the revelations of the Spirit of Truth, or we may limit the work of God with our own thinking. All these can actually result in the formation of our own “religion”, and cause us to lose a lot of amazing experiences and blessings.

The Commander Naaman on one side could humbly believe in the young slave girl’s words, but on the other side he could not accept the words of the prophet the girl introduced. When he rejected what the prophet said with his own thinking and left angrily, he however listened to his servants’ advice to just do as the prophet had said. As a result, he was really healed!

So we see continued humility is so important. Apart from this, our companions are also very important, the attitude and faith of the people around us can influence us to do the right or the wrong thing, and of course therefore indirectly affect our blessings.

10 Elisha sent a messenger to say to him, “Go, wash yourself seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored and you will be cleansed.”11 But Naaman went away angry and said, “I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, wave his hand over the spot and cure me of my leprosy. 12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than any of the waters of Israel? Couldn’t I wash in them and be cleansed?” So he turned and went off in a rage.13 Naaman’s servants went to him and said, “My father, if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be cleansed’!” 14 So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy.”
~ 2 Kings 5:10-14 ~

2012 Fasting Diary – Day 28: “Humility”

Day 28 (03/09/12)

When someone shares the word of God with us, would we look at their status, position and academic background etc, before we decide whether to listen or not? Some people’s status and position might be lower than ours, but their relationship with God, faith in Him and their knowledge and experiences with God’s Word really deserve our respect and listening to.

Yesterday we saw how that young slave girl was so bold in sharing her faith in her true God with the honourable commander of the army, as for whether or not the commander was going to listen or believe was another matter.
People who are seriously ill may not necessarily just listen to anyone’s advice too, what more to say from the mouth of someone much lower in status than you are. However, the commander chose to believe in the words of this slave girl, this was also a kind of humility, and a kind of simplicity of faith. And this simplicity indeed saved his own life too.

Many times, a little simpler, a little more humble, and a little more trusting in God’s Word, would ultimately bring blessings to our own selves…

“4 Naaman went to his master and told him what the girl from Israel had said. “By all means, go,” the king of Aram replied. “I will send a letter to the king of Israel.”…”
~ 2 Kings 5:4-5 ~

2012 Fasting Diary – Day 27: “Young girl”

Day 27 (02/09/12)

Sometimes due to our inferiority complex, or despising ourselves, or self-pity, we do not dare to glorify God or do what we ought to. In actual fact, God is very willing to use anyone regardless of your background and status. When facing people “greater” or more powerful than us, we must consider our God is bigger than anyone else; and when worrying about nobody listening to the Truth we are going to share, we must remember it is enough as long as God is pleased with what we are sharing.

The young girl the passage mentions today was no more than a nameless slave girl who was a captive in a foreign land. Despite that, she did not harbour bitterness toward God or forget God’s greatness, instead her faith was still firm and strong and she even had the boldness to share the good news with the king’s commander of the army and saved the commander’s life! In normal circumstances, we would tend to think a powerful commander would not be bothered with what a young slave girl had got to advise at all; so if were that slave girl, we would probably just keep our mouth shut…

“Now Naaman was commander of the army of the king of Aram. He was a great man in the sight of his master and highly regarded, because through him the Lord had given victory to Aram. He was a valiant soldier, but he had leprosy. Now bands from Aram had gone out and had taken captive a young girl from Israel, and she served Naaman’s wife. She said to her mistress, “If only my master would see the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.””
~ 2 Kings 5:1-3 ~

2012 Fasting Diary – Day 26: “Death risk”

Day 26 (01/09/12)

Esther was a lowly insignificant “foreigner”in the Persian kingdom, but miraculously became the queen. However, while she was enjoying the luxury and pleasure of being a queen, her own people, the Israelites were facing extermination. King Xerxes (Ahasuerus) was recorded in history as a very cruel and merciless king, should Esther give up all her luxury defying the law to plead with the king revealing her identity and risking death as well?

The Bible shows us that Esther was not just a beautiful queen, she was not a weak and helpless beauty who was interested in luxury and vanity. When she saw clearly the mission God had for her in her position, she was willing to risk all including her life without regret, just to fulfill the mission and calling God had given her!

What about us? What have we ever offered up or are we willing to offer anything to accomplish the will of God?

“Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai: 16 “Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my maids will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.””
~ Esther 4:15-16 ~

2012 Fasting Diary – Day 25: “For such a time”

 Day 25 (31/08/12)

God has a wonderful plan for everyone He places in this world, He has planned a wonderful future for everyone. Each of us can contribute something to this world no matter what your background is, God can raise you up, bless you greatly and use you.

However the problem is, many times when we start to grow in our blessings, talents, wealth, position etc, we tend to get too comfortable and slowly forget our mission, or begin to enjoy too much and forget our calling, to the extent that when we are reminded and taught, we would even look for excuses or are unwilling. If so, God can definitely raise up others to replace us, and we will therefore lose the heavenly blessing God has originally intended for us.

Therefore, may we not forget our calling in the midst of our blessings, and may we always maintain that willing heart to be used by God.

13 he sent back this answer: “Do not think that because you are in the king’s house you alone of all the Jews will escape. 14 For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?””
~ Esther 4:13-14 ~

2012 Fasting Diary – Day 24: “Trustworthy”

 Day 24 (30/08/12)

Quite a few Christians, they might seem rather “spiritual” in church, good at “worshipping” and “serving” etc, but when it comes to practical living, whether at home or work place, they do not seem to be trusted and respected that much. If so, then we would have to examine whether we are really full of God’s Spirit, or our own “spirit” or merely “acting” in church? Because in the Bible, those who were truly “spiritual” or had the presence of God, under normal circumstances, they would definitely be trusted and respected.

The Spirit of God is wise, creative, holy and almighty, so if we are really filled with His Spirit, can we not be outstanding and trustworthy?

“4 Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field. So he left in Joseph’s care everything he had; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.”
~ Gen 39:4-6 ~

2012 Fasting Diary – Day 23: “God’s presence”

Day 23 (29/08/12)

“2 The Lord was with Joseph and he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did”
~ Gen 39:2-3 ~

The Bible clearly shows us the result of having the presence of God: Success in everything! And not only that, people can “see” God is with you!
This was one thing very obvious about Joseph’s life, but success in everything does not mean therefore your life is very comfortable and without any worries or troubles!

In actual fact, Joseph went through a lot of sufferings, but in the midst of his sufferings, jobs handed to him would be completed with great success. The main reason was God was with him. However, there is always a reason as to why God is with someone!

In Joseph’s most difficult moments, he would still be looking to God, trusting Him, not doubting or grumbling, and he did not sin against God… Therefore, let us not just envy or desire his “success in everything” as the Lord was with him, let us first learn his life and endurance…

2012 Fasting Diary – Day 22: “Troubled”

Day 22 (28/08/12)

When our heart is troubled, or when we feel defeated and our thoughts get a little disturbed, we would tend to have thoughts of giving up our pursuit and endeavour. If we continue to think negatively, then some people would really give up, or some begin to go the wrong direction as their visions are blurred. Therefore, it is very crucial to know our calling clearly, to maintain an intimate relationship with God, to know how to pray to God to increase our strength and to encourage us.

In fact, Jesus did have moments when He felt troubled or “at a crossroads” too; at such a time, He quickly focussed His eyes on the Father, so He could see clearly again. When your perspective and goal are right, you would be able to carry on the journey…

““Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.”
~ John 12:27 ~
